The precise origin of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed in 1831. Over the centuries, the pilgrims brought there also crucifixes, rosaries, carvings of Lithuanian Patriots, etc. The exact number or crosses is not known, but estimates put it at 100.000 in 2006.
