It is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube. It is also knows as the Szechenyi Chain Bridge after Istvan Szechenyi, one of the major supporter of its construction. The construction of the bridge started in 1840 and was completed in 1849.
